Here's a statement from the Mayor's office on 1/14 on construction starting:
At a groundbreaking event today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, owner Dwayne Boudreaux, key partners and supporters marked the start of an $8 million restoration of the iconic Circle Food Store, 1522 St. Bernard Avenue. The project will create an estimated 75 new jobs, many directed to residents of the Seventh Ward and the bordering Treme neighborhood.
The Circle Food Store, located at the corner of St. Bernard and North Claiborne Avenues, was incorporated in 1938 and for years provided groceries, prepared food, and services such as a pharmacy, a doctor, a dentist, a chiropractor, check cashing and banking and a place to buy school uniforms.
Great news, confirmation from the TP again that things are on track for Circle Foods to re-open in 2013:
The Times-Pic published yesterday that Circle Foods is slated to re-open by Easter 2013. photos.nola.com/tpphotos/2012/...
Big update today! Circle Foods has received a $1 million loan from the city's Fresh Food Retail Initiative. Progress!
The community market and landmark gets a boost from the city's Fresh Food Retailer Initiative.
Renovation would also create part-time jobs for the neighborhood teens! Do we have to keep it as Circle Food Store? C'mon Rouse's, Breaux Mart, Robert's...step up.
I am afraid that there has not been much movement since the article a year ago. The spokesperson Samuel Cook's agency, NHS (neighborhood housing services) has since closed its center from the 7th ward. It's really too bad because I would love to go shopping here and keep my money in the neighborhood and city by shopping at the Circle Food Store.
Anyone have any updates since this was published:
I went into get my building permit and the lady who assisted me told me anecdotally that the property owner for Circle Foods had just gotten his permits a few weeks before. All they need now is all the ca$h money to finish the project.
I like the idea of returning to to a roundabout. Are there any statues monuments in the city that could use a better home?
