Wayne State University is the largest university or college by enrollment in the state of Michigan without any sort of hockey program. Wayne State University used to be home to a NCAA Division I men's ice hockey team and the state of Michigan's only NCAA I women's ice hockey team. Both teams eventually folded because they never had a suitable on campus arena.
An on campus arena for NCAA Division I ice hockey at Wayne State University would also be usable for a variety recreational activities that would be available to students on campus and the surrounding community. Other activities include open skate, figure skating, amateur hockey leagues, curling, broomball, and speed skating. During the summer months the ice can be melted and the arena could be used for indoor soccer, inline hockey, ball hockey, dodgeball, and box lacrosse.
Wayne State University should build an arena for an NCAA Division I hockey on campus for the excitement college hockey would bring to campus during the winter months and for the additional recreational opportunities this will create for the Wayne State University community. Let's bring hockey to Hockeytown!!!
