Demand Action is a campaign of Mayors Against Illegal Guns -- a national, bipartisan coalition of mayors working to make America’s communities safer by keeping illegal guns out of dangerous hands. Co-founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, the coalition has grown from a committed group of 15 members to more than 1,000 mayors from 46 states, including Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, from major cities and small towns around the country. We have more than 1.5 million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country.

Protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, drug abusers, the seriously mentally ill and other dangerous people. Mayors Against Illegal Guns advocates for common-sense measures that will close deadly gaps in our gun laws and make sure law enforcement agencies have the tools they need to detect and deter gun trafficking. We have worked with more than 100 survivors and family members of gun violence victims in public campaigns to push for solutions from Washington.

A super interesting approach being done in Richmond, Ca:

"Most neighborhood safety programs target individuals downstream from acts of violence, including victims and their families. But when ONS reviewed the homicides in Richmond, one thing became clear: About 15 young men were responsible for nearly all of them, but police couldn't prove it. So rather than working only with youth who were at-risk to become violent, ONS chose a more innovative strategy — to confront the young men who were perpetrating the violence and give them a chance for a better life."

A vast majority of Americans support expanded gun control measures, but the NRA has again and again stopped every effort in Congress to pass common-sense legislation. So now it’s time to stop the NRA.

The NRA and its lobbyists have overpowered the will of the majority of Americans for too long.

Huge win today!

"President Obama signed 23 executive orders to crack down on gun criminals, expand access to mental health services and make our schools safer. He also laid out the crucial priorities that we’ll be fighting for in the months ahead -- priorities that will save lives, including:

Fixing our broken background check system and requiring a background check for ALL gun sales.

Getting assault weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets.

Making gun trafficking a federal crime with tough penalties for offenders.

Funding public research on gun violence and gun crime that will make law enforcement more efficient and effective."

Today's the one month anniversary of Newtown. This quote from one of the parents struck me: "“We’re looking for dialogue. We’re looking for ideas. We’re looking for a national discussion to take place. We don’t want to just come out and say this is what we stand for, this is what we believe in. We want to encourage a national discussion on this. Do something different. When you look at what’s been done in the past, it hasn’t gotten us very far. We have to do something different.”

Great op-ed in USA Today from Mayor Michael Bloomberg today that clearly outlines 3 policy changes that are supported by a majority of Americans (including gun owners) -

1. Prohibit the manufacture and sale of the military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips

2. Fix the broken background check system. Half of all gun sales in the U.S. are conducted without a background check. Criminals, the mentally ill, minors and domestic abusers are all prohibited from purchasing guns, but they all can do so as easily as attending a gun show or going online.

3. Make gun trafficking a felony
