18 neighbors want a community hackerspace where young people can learn marketable skills in Downtown Oakland.

I like the economic development in popuphood and temescal alley but it seems to be benefiting only white hipsters (like me).

Hackerspaces are places where community members can share tools, ideas, and valuable skills. They are also economic hubs for coworking-- places where independent entrepreneurs can work and hold meetings.

I'd like to see a space where classes are taught on gardening, web development, bicycle repair, computer repair, community health, nutrition, solar energy, and other skills that help underserved members of our community develop sustainable, empowered livelihoods.

I think this would help our city's economic development boom mean more than buying faddish art materials from white twentysomethings.

We’re excited to let you know that over the past couple of months, we've been working hard to solidify the form and mission of kitLAB - a new maker-type space, located at 5447 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, near Temescal. kitLAB will be a hub for budding and experienced artists, engineers, educators, activists, creative changemakers, and local community members to make tools, kits and artworks to share and evolve together. Working in collaboration with the East Bay Community Space, kitLAB’s mission will be to resource and develop people’s innate abilities into skills for creating ever more complex, elegant and useful works to offer back to the community.

If you’d like to learn more about our mission and vision, and follow our progress in the coming months as we work toward our opening in late-fall, we encourage you to take a look at our evolving kitLAB website - www.kitlab.org/. We also invite you to follow us on our kitLAB Facebook page - www.facebook.com/thekitlab/?fr...!

I highly recommend you research Space Federation if 501c3 is something you're interested in. They can shelter you under theirs, provide resources and mentoring, and help you hit the ground running.

And of course our friends at Noisebridge and Ace Monster Toys, already mentioned above.

Hi, Ted + all. Online search for HeatSync Labs in AZ. It is AZ's first hackerspace... about 3 years old, I believe.

Jacob is super-friendly, and could help you to organize this space!

Also, Hub Oakland is coming!
"Hub Oakland is much more than just a shared workspace: it is the vibrant center of a new Urban Innovation Cluster in uptown Oakland. It provides an on-ramp for diverse populations to incubate new mission-driven businesses, and create local jobs and global solutions. It is a place of convergence where social justice advocates, green tech entrepreneurs, holistic practitioners, artists and musicians work side-by-side to tackle some of humanity’s most difficult challenges. At the Hub, we all work together to prototype the future. It is a place where ideas turn into action, for the benefit of all beings."
