Jane Jacobs Walk is a program of the Center for the Living City, a nonprofit organization created by people who knew Jane Jacobs and were fortunate enough to call her a friend. As an organization we celebrate her life and legacy by helping people organize walks in their communities around the time of Jane’s birthday in early May.

We honor Jane Jacobs by helping people leave the isolation of their homes to come together to experience areas of their city outside of the automobile. Our mission is to help people walk, observe, and connect with their community and environment. We inspire people to make a difference because a Jane Jacobs Walk enables members of a community to discover and respond to the complexities of their city and environment through personal and shared observation.

So great to see the number of walks coming to Salt Lake City, and beyond.
And now we hear there will be even more walks with colleagues in the Middle East. Love it.

Presently speaking with folks from Congress for the New Urbanism and a local pastor about teaming up for a walk during the conference (May 29-June 1). Let's start talking JJW! I'll let you know more as soon as I do.

A few year ago students from the U of U organized a great Jane's Roll on bikes, from 9th and 9th to Sugarhouse and back again, sat at the Coffee Garden talked about their experience. What about a Jane's Roll from coffee house to coffee house one morning (and maybe coffee and a roll at Eva's new bakery?)

Would be great to see JJ Walks happening in collaboration with the Utah Heritage Foundation celebrating preservation as part of our the city's work on sustainability. What if all of the Community Councils held a walk in the neighborhoods they care most about, and a Bonneville Shoreline Trail walk, or a walk to remind us of all the buried creeks under our feet?
