I used to do more with the San Francisco Late Night Coalition (their proposal is posted here: www.sflnc.com/legislation.html... to Extend Last Call) and there were stats that a 4am (or later) last call is actually beneficial in many ways:
- most people self-selectively end their evenings around 1:30/2am regardless of last call so pushing it back means less people all leaving/driving at that time so the streets are safer (especially for us bikers)

- economically the places that do choose to stay open later (not all will of course) will have more economic opportunities for their employees (as well as the folks who are off work and needing a drink! - again, like me :)

- as Chirag says, there are statistics that prove that a later last call = less binging since you can drink all night so you don't have to get sh#@faced before last call and hence less aggro behavior

lots more at the SFLNC website: www.sflnc.com/

Senator Mark Leno introduced state wide legislation, SB635, that would create a path for cities and counties to offer later and flexible last call times up to 4 AM. This empowerment of local communities to offer flexible ending times for beverage service is set to be heard in the Senate Governmental Organizational committee on Tuesday April 9th, so the call for action is now. OptionsCA.com is a new website offering up all the details on his proposal and a simple way for your voice to be heard.

Can you BYOB to The End Up? I kind of doubt it, but if so, some kind of "corkage" fee could bring in some revenue.

I think there would be less mugging and fights, because instead of people being put out on the street (when they're still awake and lively), they can stay in the bar all cozy until last call at 4am, at which point they stumble out bleary-eyed and chill.

NYC is open past 2am and there aren't many fights...

At the same time we have riots when we win at baseball.

Yeesh. I think the Mission would result in more bar fights / muggings / vandalism. I'm thinking the Castro.

Which 'hoods/bars would be the best candidates for this?

I'm thinking the Mission.

I totally love how alive a city becomes when things are open later or all night. Thinking the bustle of Hong Kong!

I completely agree with you, Fiona. Plus it'd be less scarier to wander the streets of SF if there are more people outside.
