We want a protected bike lane at Howard (@Fremont) to reduce conflict with casual carpool dropoffs in The East Cut district.

Casual Carpool is great.  But there is insufficient space, both in width and in number of spaces, for the demand.  Drivers must park in the bike lane, and passengers do not look for cyclists before throwing open their doors into oncoming cyclist traffic.  A short bike channel, located between the parking space and the sidewalk, would resolve these conflicts.  The city already installs this infrastructure for bus islands with bus channels - examples are at North Point/Polk and Potrero/16th.

This continues to be an issue, and has been compounded by construction equipment stored in the casual carpool parking spots, as well as on the prior block. The bike lane from Beale to First is a veritable gauntlet of double-parked delivery trucks and casual carpoolers exiting vehicles and creating substantial conflict. A protected bike lane could be implemented, without losing a single parking space, from the Embarcadero to (at least) First, that would remove these conflicts.
