15 neighbors want a Bench-Go-Round – a playful public seat that encourages connections between friends and strangers in Central Market, San Francisco.

About
The Bench-Go-Round is interactive public seating that encourages connection and play between pedestrians. It promotes a spirit of cooperation and collaboration amongst groups that may not normally interact.

It consists of two opposite facing benches, placed side by side across a central balancing point. The benches freely rotate 360 degrees around the central point in either direction. In short, it's a bench meets merry-go-round.

One can use the bench alone for seating. But when someone sits on the opposite bench, a surprising and delightful physical relationship between the two people is formed.

Community Outreach
I fully intend to engage my site's community in a hands on way throughout my process. Early on I will interact with them in person researching their use of the site and interviewing them about their needs and wants. I'll supplement that by soliciting feedback on the initial renderings of the idea. I will iterate and repeat on this process as needed to evolve the final design.

Very cool idea... it's so San Francisco! I think it may be a great way to repurpose materials from demolished buildings... each one would be unique.

So cool! I'm STILL amazed at the positive encounters strangers have talking to each other at the LIZ on Market Street. I think something playful like this that puts people together would have a similar effect. exploliz.tumblr.com/
