Skywatching: The GEMINID EDITION!
Wednesday, December 13, 2017, 8:00pm - 10pm
Dorothea Dix Park Big Field, Barbour Drive

Come view the Geminid Meteor Shower of 2017! Join staff and volunteers from the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society (CHAOS) and Raleigh Astronomy Club (RAC) for a free skywatching program at Dorothea Dix Park. Bring a blanket, sleeping bag or reclining chair to watch for Geminid Meteors to streak across the sky. You won't even need telescopes to see these shooting stars.

Telescopes will be set up for you to take a closer look at star clusters, galaxies and nebulae. We'll also have sky tours and star storytelling!

Join us for an evening with Gil Penalosa. Gil Penalosa is passionate about cities for all people. Gil advises decision makers and communities on how to create vibrant cities and healthy communities and focuses on the design and use of parks and streets as great public places, as well as sustainable mobility: walking, riding bicycles, using public transit, and the new use of cars.

Gil is the founder and chair of the board of the internationally recognized non-profit organization 8 80 Cities. The organization was created centered on a simple but powerful philosophy; if you create a great city for an 8 year old and an 80 year old, you will create a successful city for all people.

Come meet landscape architect and MVVA president Michael Van Valkenburgh and principal Matthew Urbanski as well as other members of the planning team for Dorothea Dix Park. Michael and Matthew will share insights into their design approach and lessons-learned from the firm’s public park projects around the country. Most importantly, they’ll share what makes the opportunity today at Raleigh’s Dix Park so unique and significant for the city, the region and the state.
