MemFix is an all day event... so, when will it be announced? And where, precisely?
So, it's November 1st... when do we find out which idea will be funded?
This is EXACTLY the kind of program I wish I could have gone through. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a farmer and I knew I didn't want to go to college, but I was convinced to go anyway, and I'm $60,000 in debt from it. Because of that debt, my chances of farming my own land are slim to none. A program like this could change everything for me. I have tons of friends and colleagues in town with similar stories who feel the same way.
This project would be hugely beneficial for addressing education, employment, and blight, all in one go. The amount of blight that we have definitely puts us in a unique position to create a hyper-local food economy. This program would beautify neglected neighborhoods, create a resilient food system, and provide entrepreneurship opportunities. I only wish this would have existed 10 years ago!
This project could be huge for blighted Memphis communities. Our vacant lots are an opportunity to create a hyper-local food economy here. A food and farming entrepreneurship training program would not only positively affect our urban landscape, but could create real employment opportunities in a city that desperately needs it.
