Hunter Franks
I use creativity to build community. My participatory projects create shared spaces and experiences that break down social barriers and catalyze connections between people and communities.

I am the founder of the Neighborhood Postcard Project, a worldwide participatory project that collects personal positive stories from residents in marginalized neighborhoods and sends them out to random local residents to foster community connection. I am also the founder of the League of Creative Interventionists, a worldwide network of people working to build community through creativity. I am also a co-founder of [freespace], a movement to activate underutilized spaces into temporary cultural centers where people can create change in their lives, their communities, and their world.

Previously, I was an Artist-In-Residence at the Makeshift Society, a creative co-working space, where I created a participatory photography project with youth in the marginalized Bayview neighborhood to document their neighborhood through their eyes. Prior to that, I served as Community Manager for the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation, where I collaborated with local organizations and residents to co-create solutions to civic challenges.

In 2011 I walked from Los Angeles to New Mexico — an experience that continues to fuel my desire to connect and engage with underrepresented communities.

Join us to put postcards into random people's mailboxes, hand them out to strangers, and leave them in public places to be discovered!

We will walk through the Castro/Noe Valley area handing out postcards with positive stories of the Central Market/Mid-Market neighborhood to strangers to show them a positive side of a neighborhood that many only see or hear the negatives of.
