Placemaking at Wayne State

How can we make Wayne State University a better place?

Progress
About this Project
President M. Roy Wilson and stakeholders from across Wayne State are leading a collaborative placemaking initiative to identify the best strategies for activating public spaces on and around our campus in Midtown Detroit.

Throughout the 2014 fall semester, the Placemaking Steering Committee engaged the campus and surrounding community to identify approaches to improve our campus environment. Based on this feedback, we selected and implemented four (4) projects to test in 2015 including Walk Wayne State signage, a public bike repair stand and air pump, the DIA's Inside Out paintings and flexible outdoor seating. Since then, we continue to evaluate placemaking initiatives and test new ideas.

We appreciate the students, faculty, staff, alumni and neighbors that have contributed to this ongoing initiative. Please continue to share ideas, support existing ones, and offer feedback as we shape the University’s presence in Midtown. Join our mailing list for updates delivered to your inbox!

Woodward & Warren Park Campaign Kick-Off!
Wednesday, September 20, 2017, 6:00pm
Woodbridge Pub

We've heard our students, staff and neighbors loud and clear: You want a great public space at Woodward & Warren Ave. Join Wayne State University today to kick off our crowdfunding campaign to transform a portion of its Woodward and Warren greenspace into an active, family-friendly public park!

With your help, we will add sustainable landscaping, pop-up seating, shade sails and lawn games. We'll also build a WSU Placemaking/Detroit Experience Factory (DXF) satellite kiosk, which will serve as a place where students, employees, residents and visitors can go for information on the city.

Join the campaign kick-off today, Wednesday, September 20, and help get the ball rolling!

The lights and signage are up outside Old Main! 700 LED lights look good in pictures (below), but they’re even more special in person. They’ll be up through the end of January. We hope you stop by to see them shine.

Thank you all again for helping Light Up Campus!

They do lights in the New Center along Second and Grand Blvd that look similar - always my favorite part of the holiday!

The four or five trees down Agnes in West Village that stay lighted all year really do make a HUGE difference in atmosphere! Can't wait to see this.

Update! The Office of Economic Development has launched a crowdfunding campaign through Wayne State’s new Warrior Funder platform to raise money to purchase and install holiday lights on campus.

Our goal is to debut the lights in early Dec. and let them shine through the end of Jan.—lighting up campus for Wayne State students and employees, neighborhood residents and businesses, and visitors. Please consider making a donation of $5, $10 or $25 to help us get started towards our goal of $3,000. Donate $50 and you can help decide where the lights should go!
