What would the Bywater like to see at the Historic Wiltz Gym?

Asked by Bjacobson
Project Update
The Wiltz Gym is now the home of New Orleans Art Supply and NOLA Bark Market. Welcome back to the neighborhood!

What is the Historic Wiltz Gym building?

The Historic Wiltz Gymnasium was built in 1916 by the New Orleans School Board. The 96-year old building has been sitting blighted and on the market since it was sold at auction in 2010. We believe the Wiltz can be restored and again be put in service of the neighborhood.

Why did we ask the Bywater what it wanted at the Historic Wiltz Gym?

Knowing what businesses and services the neighborhood wants will help us find successful tenants for the building. Currently, the building is zoned residential (RD-3), but we believe the building is best suited for neighborhood business (B1-A). We’re working with neigbhors and the Bywater Neighborhood Association to find a use that works for everybody.

We have already begun working with immediate neighbors and BNA to get feedback on what they do and do not want the site to become.

Where can people learn more and share feedback?

Your input on Neighborland regarding the Wiltz Gym resulted in the Bywater Neighborhood Association reconsidering its previous position, and voted in favor of supporting the change from RD-3 to B1-A.

Thanks to everyone who gave us their feedback.

I'm not sure if these people mean a youth home or just a center - if the latter, Stallings Community Center on St Claude should be finished being renovated next year. It is operated by NORD and will run arts and sports programs for kids and adults.

The Stallings Center, a NORD community center open to boys, girls, and adults, is being renovated and should be finished next year. This center is on St Claude in Bywater.

Actually there is a dance studio opening up on St Claude in Bywater. St Claude is the best place for all these commercial uses of property since it is a major thoroughfare. St Claude is really starting to blossom out....
